Oosterpark - Monument (part 2)
The National Monument of Slavery Past is a monument in Amsterdam to commemorate the abolition of slavery in the Netherlands. The monument stands in the Oosterpark in Amsterdam. The creation was initiated in 1999 by the National Platform Slavery Past. Uot of five designs, the Surinamese artists Erwin de Vries was chosen. The monument was on July 1, 2002 by Queen Beatrix unveiled. Only official guests were admitted, with fences the whole ceremony was hidden from the public. This led to frustration and anger in mostly Surinamese and Antillean public, after the ceremony, they were given the opportunity to visit the monument. On every July 1 there is an annual meeting at the monument, commemorating the abolition of slavery by the Netherlands on July 1, 1863.
